Alex Woodie

AI skills are in high demand, as companies seek to leverage emerging tech like generative AI for competitive advantage. But what specific skills are the most in-demand? The folks at Upwork provided a clue.

A recent survey by Upwork found that generative AI job posts on the platform were up more than 1,000% in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the end of 2022, while genAI-related job searches were up more than 1,500% over the same period of time.

“This sentiment around hiring plus the surge of activity from companies served as strong early indications that businesses are paying significant attention to the opportunities generative AI can provide,” the company says.

For the first six months of the year, the top 10 GenAI related searches on the Upwork job boards were:

  1. ChatGPT

  9. Natural Language Processing (NLP)
  10. Bard

Generative AI is the top is the top skill at the moment, according to the company’s website. From the first quarter to the second quarter, the fastest growing GenAI-related searches on Upwork were:

  6. Generative AI
  7. AI Chatbot
  8. Midjourney
  9. Prompt Engineering

The shift in search terms shows businesses are moving from searching for singular generative AI tools to searching for AI applications and services, which signals that leaders and hiring managers are progressing their understanding of generative AI and its diverse use cases, says Kelly Monahan, managing director of the Upwork Research Institute.

“The growing demand for AI applications and services is important as true business value for generative AI lies not in a singular AI tool, but in understanding the capabilities and diverse use cases for this technology,” Monahan says. “The search terms companies are using and what they will hire for are evolving to be more sophisticated, and we think we’ll continue to see that understanding deepen over time.”
